Story of Embroidery (Amlikar) Pashmina Shawls
First emerged as a replika of Kani shawl designs, embroidery designs soon became a popular choice for Kashmiri shawl makers and shawl lovers for their affordability, flexibility and relatively shorter time to make.
Designs are hand pressed on pashmina fabric, using a speical charcoal based ink, then the embroidery artists are provided with colored threads based on desired color palette, and spend hundreds to thousands of hours, stitching the designs. An Amlikar piece with complex design and color palette can take 12-18 months to complete.
Today embroidery is mostly done using cotton or silk threads. Silk embroidery designs are highly desirable as they are extremely light, intricate and luxurious looking.
